Saturday nights at 93 Feet East are always brimming with delight and dancefloor joy. But this week huge amounts of anticipation will be making its way to the east.
Walk along Brick Lane, Saturday night attire at the ready, stride 93 times quick march until you reach us and resident promoters Bangers and Mash, who will be brining The Pipettes to 93 Feet East for a night of musical mayhem.
The very fly looking band will be igniting the dancefloor as they take to the ones and twos, blessing the club and all who sail in her!
Very happy was I when they agreed to be the very first group interviewed for 93 Feet East’s brand new blog. Ladies and Gentlemen I give you the Pipettes:-
Hi guys, over the years you’ve had more changes than a baby’s bottom, how has this effected the dynamic of the band, and why do people keep legging it?
Yes we have, each change is because someone gets bored of writing pop and craves greater self-expression as being in a seven piece band doesn’t leave you with more than one or two songs included per album, which is fair enough. Those who then join have to pledge an allegiance to 1 - The Pipettes and 2 – Stock Aitken and Waterman. The dynamic remains pretty much the same, seven people contributing equally to all aspects of the band.
How does your creative process work, does one person write the lyrics and another produce the music etc?
See above, normally one person has a hummable tune, possibly some chords. We then all lob in our respective parts and see if anything needs to be changed/refined or just let it be.
You formed in Brighton, any thoughts what should happen with the pier?
The one that’s rotting (West Pier) should be left as it is, it looks pretty. The Palace Pier, err, make it look more like the West Pier.
You can work with two people dead and two alive who would they be?
Dead – Eazy E, Jack Nance
Alive – Ronnie Spector, Georgio Moroder
You’re headlining Glastonbury and programming the other stages, who’s on the bill, would you have any room for the Levellers?
Gonzales, Machine, Larry Levan, Boney M, Kid Creole & The Coconuts, Sonita, Charles & Eddie, The Fat Larry Band, The Johnson Brothers, Juvelen, Friendly Fires, MBV, Scooter, The Commodores, Frankmusic, Rose Dougall and the Distractions, Chromeo, Grace Jones, Metronomy, Usher, R Kelly, Gotye, the Ink Spots, Marit Bergman, Smoosh, Chicago, Hall & Oates, Max Tundra, Animal Collective, Black Moth Super Rainbow, A Studio, Billie The Vision and the Dancers, Earth Wind & Fire, Hood, the Noughts and Crosses Band, Boyracer, Allo Darlin’, Xylitol, T2, JME, Wiley, The Ragga Twins, Hexicon, Moustache of Insanity, Stuart Flynn, Leonard Cohen, Monster Bobby, Black Devil Disco Club, Zomby, Burial, the Blackout Crew, Buraka Som Sistema, Scottie B, MC Gringao, DJ Marlboro, Bonde do Role, Os Mutantes, the B52s, Devo, Lucky Soul, Ennio Morricone, Goblin, Liquid Liquid, the Legends, the Embassy, Rough Bunnies, Tender Trap, Pele Carlberg, Hercules and Love Affair, Hudson Mohawke, Stereo Totale, Mike Sheridan, Ruff Sqwad, Pay As You Go Cartel, Jarvis Cocker, W/Trem, Bela Emerson, Two Seat Bicycle, Patrick Hamilton, les Domestico, the Focus Group, the Advisory Circle, Belbury Poly, Public Enemy, Seun Kuti & Egypt 80, Angelo Badalamenti, Thomas Truax, Chris T-T, Richard Sanderson, Dylan Bates, Jeff Mills, Underground Resistance, Snoop Dogg, Robyn, Matmos, Pierre Boulez conducts the music of Anton Webern, Jea-Jacques Perrey, Daft Punk, the Mexicos, Komon, Talking to Teapots, the Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Suburban Kids with Biblical Names, Restlesslist, the Residents… and new for Glastonbury this year, The Opera Stage, featuring performances of Tristan and Isolde, Wozzeck, Orfeo, and the Rake’s Progress.
There is a place for the Levellers, just because they’ve obviously an association with the festival, possibly through stereotype. However, like the National Trust, we should preserve these things, maybe hang some Turners up on them too.
As a band you always look very dapper, the work of stylists or no way Jose?
We are our own stylists, always have been, always will.
What’s your biggest musical achievement to date and what’s your ultimate aim as a band?
Biggest achievement is being kept off the top of the Japanese charts by J-Lo. Aim is to get back to the top of the Japanese charts and start ruling the world.
Some musicians I’ve talked to tell me that they hate the music making process (long hours in the studio, spending 8hrs on a bassline etc) and prefer performing on stage, which do you prefer of the two?
We’re in the position of being a bit of a new entity live, what with our line-up change, so we’re uber excited about that. However we have been having a whale of a time with our producer, Martin Rushent, on the new record.
What do you like and like and dislike about London?
Like the buildings. Dislike the price.
Where would your ideal day and night take you?
San Francisco to Tokyo.
What’s on your record player, stereo or iPod?
See our line-up for Glastonbury.
Somebody puts a million pounds in your hand where does it end up?
Wherever the NBC financial journalists tell us to invest it.
What have you got coming up, releases, tours, new pets?
Once we’ve finished recording the album we are going to put it out, we’re assessing our options as we speak.
For those who’ve never heard the Pipettes music, what does it look like?
Mr Blobby gunged and dressed in top hat and tails.
Your going to be DJing for Bangers and Mash at 93 Feet East what can we expect to hear in your set?
See the Glasto line-up answer (except MBV, well, maybe ‘Sunny Sunday Smile’).
The Pipettes will be DJing at Bangers and Mash this Saturday 4th April. Don’t miss it.
Thanks very much,
